Springfield, IL – Senator Haine (D- Alton) attended a medal presentation ceremony honoring veterans Ted James Mitan and Clifford John Haug. Haine presented Mitan’s wife, Grace, and daughter, Julie, with both the Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal for his service.
“It is an honor to have the chance to present these medals to the Mitan family,” Haine said. “It is also great to be present and to help honor Clifford Haug. These men risked their lives in order to protect our freedoms. Both of them deserve our gratitude and respect.”
Ted J. Mitan was drafted into the United States Army in 1952, and was sent to Germany where he served as an interpreter due to his ability to speak Polish, German and Russian.
Julie Embrich, daughter of Ted Mitan said, “We are very honored to be a part of this special ceremony. My father was very proud of his military service.”
Harry F. Sawyer, Assistant Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ affairs, presented the wife and daughter of Clifford John Haug with two Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
Sandra Special, Daughter of Clifford Haug said “It was a wonderful opportunity to come together to honor our veterans and our families. I want to express our thanks to Senator Haine and his staff on their dedication to this project. I also want thank to the Veterans’ Association, the Patriot Guard and the wonderful staff of Foxes Grove.”
The medal ceremony took place at the Foxes Grove Supportive Living Community in Wood River, IL. The event was well attended by the families of the honorees, Earl M. White with the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs, members of the Foxes Grove Community and members of the Patriot Guard.
