Haine on LGDFSPRINGFIELD – State Senator Bill Haine (D-Alton) voted Wednesday to protect Alton, Granite City, Edwardsville and other Metro East communities from deep cuts in state funding.

In February, Governor Bruce Rauner proposed a 50 percent reduction to county and city governments’ state funding.

“Our communities rely on their funding from the state,” Haine said. “Cuts to this funding would lead to higher property taxes and put devastating constraints on local governments’ ability to provide important services. Furthermore, such cuts would likely lead to the layoff of police and firefighters, thereby weakening the safety of our communities.”

Yesterday’s vote, however, will save this funding so local governments can continue to effectively serve their communities, and police and fire fighters can continue to protect public safety.
