nullSPRINGFIELD, IL – After the success of a recent stolen metals sting operation in the Metro East, State Senator William Haine (D – Alton) commended local police for their efforts in the investigation.

“Our local law enforcement officials show time and time again that the Metro East has some of the best in this state,” Haine said. “We must continue to provide them with the tools necessary to ensure that our laws are obeyed and order is kept.”

In 2007, Haine passed legislation to help assist law enforcement in combating metal theft. The legislation, brought to Senator Haine by the Madison County Sheriff, the Police Chiefs of Madison County, and several detectives in Madison County, requires scrap metal dealers and recyclers to maintain an identification database for purposes of tracking potential illegal reselling of stolen metals. The measure also includes graduated penalties and fines for noncompliance.

“Vandals had been ravaging area churches, schools, and businesses for far too long with this type of theft,” Haine said, speaking to the origins of the law. “One of the major problems here is that the ten dollars of scrap metal often comes at a price of hundreds or thousands of dollars of long-term damage and needed repair.”

“This seemingly petty theft has had major consequences for the people in our community,” continued Haine. “Particularly in the summer when air conditioners were torn apart for their metal, leaving many without needed relief from the sweltering heat.”

“The police chiefs and investigative units have done an excellent job and I will do whatever possible to help them continue to serve and protect our communities,” Haine stated.
