nullSPRINGFIELD, ILIllinois State Senator William Haine (D – Alton) has passed a law ensuring that the children of military families continue to have access to educational opportunities.

“We have helped many families with this law, and by extending it, we will continue to do so,” Haine stated.

House Bill 3035 extends the Educational Opportunity for Military Children Act by three years. The purpose of the act is to address the obstacles facing the children of military families when they are required to transfer to schools in other states.  Illinois is one of 27 states to take part in the Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, a program supported by the Department of Defense that seeks to alleviate such burdens for military families.

The Educational Opportunity for Military Children Act exempts children of military personnel from being charged tuition when they are required to attend a school while in the care of a non-custodial parent. The act also creates a more flexible time frame by which admissions requirements may be met, such as transcripts and immunizations records.

“Being a military family is difficult enough without having to jump through hoops to get your children enrolled in school,” Haine said. “This bill extends the current law that removes barriers that these families have experienced and ensures that their children have the same opportunities to succeed academically as other children.”

House Bill 3035 extends the original law by three years and grants each active-duty military installation commander in Illinois the authority to appoint a representative to the State Council that oversees the program.

“This bill gives military service members an additional voice in this process so that we can better address their needs and help get their children into the classroom without delay,” Haine stated.

House Bill 3035 awaits action by the Governor.
