HaineFloorShot1SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois State Senate denied a motion to accept Governor Quinn’s three appointments to Southern Illinois University’s board of trustees. The senate voted 0-23 with 32 senators voting present.

“These three appointees were given to us from the governor without any background information at all,” Senator Bill Haine (D–Alton) said. “Illinois’s constitution outlines this process clearly: the governor appoints with the advice and consent of the senate, there is no way we can give advice or consent to these appointments if we don’t know who these people are.”

Quinn named the three replacements to fill vacancies after he did not renew three of the previous trustees’ appointments.

hainehsv1SPRINGFIELD, IL – An unsuccessful motion by Illinois’s Attorney General’s office does little to change the status of concealed carry laws in Illinois.

A 6-4 decision by the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied a motion to reconsider its December ruling that the State’s current ban on carrying firearms outside the home is unconstitutional.

This decision reaffirms a 7th Court three judge panel’s finding that Illinois’s concealed carry ban is unconstitutional. The State was given a 180 day deadline to pass a right-to-carry law; the deadline expires June 9.

“This ruling is another step towards Illinois becoming a concealed carry state,” Senator Bill Haine (D–Alton) said. “I am committed to allowing law-abiding citizens to defend themselves from criminal acts of violence.”

If the June 9 deadline passes without a concealed carry law citizens with valid FOID cards would be free to carry firearms outside of their homes with very few limitations.

“The family unit is the most important part of our community,” said Haine. “Strong families make sure that their children are taught good manners and are given the tools they need to succeed. Our community understands and values the traditional family, and I will continue to defend the values we hold dear.”
