After a Belleville News-Democrat report found that the Department of Human Services’ (DHS) Office of Inspector General failed to investigate the over 50 cases of neglected and abuse, State Senator Bill Haine took steps to prevent a similar situation from happening again.

“It’s been a while since I led an investigation, but I seem to recall from my time as State’s Attorney that when someone dies, that’s usually a good time to ask questions, not close the books,” Senator Haine said. “The governor’s changes are a good start, but further action must be taken immediately to ensure all cases of abuse and neglect are handled correctly by the Department of Human Services.”

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The state’s child protection agency gained newfound powers to investigate parents who expose their children to the dangers of meth labs, thanks to legislation sponsored by state Senator Bill Haine, an Alton Democrat. Haine’s legislation, Senate Bill 2849, was signed into law Friday by the governor.

ALTON, IL – The controversial legislative scholarship program will officially be abolished under legislation signed into law today. House Bill 3810, co-sponsored by State Senator Bill Haine (D-Alton), will end the program on September 1 and establish a task force to examine other tuition and fee waivers offered at public universities, totaling $415 million a year. The task force will be required to report back to the General Assembly by April 15, 2013.
